Transport for London: Update Power Standards Suite : Discipline Engineer (currently 3 months)
Transport for London (TFL) historically had a Power Services Contract with EDF Energy known as Powerlink. In 2013 this was brought ‘in house’. The suite of standards, particularly relating to power systems were still ‘Powerlink’ documents. Engaged as Power Specialist Engineer, seconded to Standards and Quality Systems, was tasked with updating Standards to align with current London Underground working practices and current EU and British standards, including Statutory instruments such as Low Voltage and EMF Directives.
Succeeded in analysing and updating Standards, Procedures and Work Instructions to meet TFL requirements.
Network Rail: Safety Improvement Notice (SIN119) : Principal Electrical Engineer (6 months)
Network Rail received a Safety Improvement Notice (SIN119) that targeted the safety of signalling power supplies. Engaged to produce a strategy to address the issues raised. Drafted and contributed to new standards for installation, design and system retrofit using new technologies; introduced new suppliers and approved new products; encouraged compliant supply chain; and communicated strategy to stakeholders. Succeeded in producing and communicating strategy to meet SIN119 requirements within six months.
ilecsys: Automated Trackside Lighting: Technical Project Manager (6 months)
Network Rail is required to maintain railway points and carry out maintenance safely at night. Engaged to investigate automation of trackside lighting to address safety, reliability and cost issues. Designed system that incorporates new technology; used PLC with GSM modem to control the system; ensured system was programmable to be available at specific times; and built in voltage/current monitoring to allow system to be used as diagnostic tool. Succeeded in designing/proving system that enables lights to be checked safely using a mobile phone.
ilecsys: Rail Industry Class II Equipment: Technical Project Manager (36 months)
ilecsys was expanding its range of safety critical electrical products into the Rail industry. Engaged to scope requirements and design cost effective Class II Switchgear to meet Network Rail specifications and BS/EN standards. Designed standard product; carried out external testing; drafted manuals and testing regimes; and produced product acceptance evidence. Succeeded in supporting ilecsys to become a major supplier of Class II equipment and solutions to the Rail industry over a three year period.
Ilecsys: Signal Wireless Remote Distant (SWORD): Technical Project Manager (6 months)
The rail infrastructure is required to place signals on lines with little traffic. Network Rail engaged ilecsys to produce stand alone environmentally sound solution. Deployed to design methanol powered signal. Designed system using composite technologies and ‘plug and play’ device; worked closely with suppliers; integrated monitoring system to ensure all weather operation; and tested product. Succeeded in designing Signal Wireless Remote Distant (SWORD) which was displayed at Rail Live event and generated interest across the industry.
Aerotest: Aero Engine Test Facility Australia: Electrical Project Manager (36 months)
Aerotest initiated a project to design a bespoke aero engine test facility in Australia. Engaged to design all electrical systems, power, instrumentation, data acquisition systems, comms and security. Drafted designs and instructed contractors; oversaw electrical installation in UK and installation overseas; carried out testing, commissioning and fault finding; and produced all manuals/technical documents. Succeeded in developing fully operational and portable system at two sites testing T56 series Rolls Royce engines.
Aerotest: Aero Engine Test Facility Australia: Electrical Project Manager (3 months)
Aerotest was required to follow Machinery Safety Directive for UK/EU projects. Deployed to investigate and implement safety devices for various projects. Implemented Pilz safety relay system for mobile aero engine test facilities; the fully programmable system controlled fuel pumps and propeller engine emergency stop linked to external PLC systems; implemented smaller system for fuel nozzle test rigs to monitor fuel flow, temperature and pressure linked to local operator controls. Succeeded in implementing fully compliant and stable systems.
Ilecsys and Aerotest : Introduction of CE Mark: Technical Project Manager (12-24 months)
ilecsys and Aerotest were required to CE mark products to allow sale in UK and European markets. Deployed to investigate process and implement new procedures company wide. Created technical/design files to demonstrate legislative requirements; created new working procedures, audits, checks and documentation within QA systems; worked with HR, Sales, QA and Engineers to amend Standard Operating Procedures; and delivered staff training. Succeeded in achieving CE mark with robust systems and enabling growth in new markets.
Aerotest: Honeywell Aero Engine Test Facility: Electrical Project Manager (12-19months)
Honeywell Aerospace required test facility for LF502 series jet engines and engaged Aerotest to manage the project. Deployed to manage electrical design. Designed all electrical systems for the engine test facility; directed installation and managed ongoing design changes; assisted in final installation, test and commission of all systems; and acted as Technical Support Engineer post implementation to support modification, upgrade or repair. Succeeded in supporting delivery of high profile engine test cell endorsed by Honeywell (USA).
